Panel Discussion: Careers in Public Libraries

ImageThe McGill ABQLA Student Chapter was very pleased to invite Lora Baiocco, Heather Brydon, and Joanne de Groot to speak about their careers, experiences and tips for students interested in public libraries on February 9, 2011.  For this event, Panel Discussion: Careers in Public Libraries, the seats in the School of Information Studies’ beautiful conference room were remarkably full.

Panellists each described their careers and current responsibilities, offering background on how they entered the library world. They then spoke about professional development and strongly encouraged students to become involved in the library community.  Their suggestions for involvement included joining associations and participating in conferences, whether it be by volunteering, attending, or presenting or by following the event on Twitter if attendance is not feasible.

A Q & A session followed, where MLIS students asked questions on topics ranging from job searching and interview preparation to the work-life balance of public librarians.  Lora, Heather and Joanne were very helpful, collegial and built upon each other’s comments when answering questions.
ImageFor the few days following the event, there was a buzz of feedback which mainly included the descriptors “informative” and “enjoyable!”  Thanks again to our panellists!

Thank you to the McGill ABQLA Student Chapter Executive for their promotion and coordination of the event, as well as the excellent baked goods!  The 2010/2011 Executive team is composed of Katarina Daniels and Beth Potter (Co-Vice-Presidents); Morgan Eaton and Adèle Flannery (Co-Communications Officers); and Sabrina Hepworth and Anne-Marie Quiring (Co-Secretary/Treasurers).
