President's Message - June 2011

Success…it is the only word that comes to mind when referring to this year’s ABQLA Annual Conference. With a new venue, a new one-day format, a theme that is central to the challenges libraries are facing (mobility), and a slew of internationally known speakers, we hoped that we had all the ingredients for a winning event.

The conference planning committee put together a record-breaking event not only from a financial point of view but also in terms of attendance. 68.7% of attendees responded to the evaluation form sent out after the conference, and the satisfaction rate for user experience of the day of the conference was a roaring 87 %!  

For this, I have to thank a fantastic, dedicated conference planning committee who was strongly committed to a job more than well done.

In addition I would like to thank all our sponsors, without whom we would not be able to offer such a strong conference program.

I had not yet come down from cloud nine when I was swept away to Halifax to attend the Canadian Library Association 2011 National Conference and Trade Show. The variety and choice of sessions offered were very impressive.  All attendees could easily find a session to their liking. These are only a few of the sessions I attended: Libraries and Teens, Leadership, Moving to Mobile, The Role of eBooks in Public Libraries, and The Great Debate – Be it Resolved that Library Associations are Obsolete!

I have attended several conferences but this was the first time that I was invited as the president of a provincial association. As president, I had access to some very interesting meetings and discussions with other presidents of provincial associations as well as with CLA executives.   It is always surprising to hear how other associations have the exact same concerns and are experiencing the exact same issues. I have always found that networking is an important part of a conference, and CLA was no exception.

In the past few months, I had the opportunity to be a member of the Jury d’architecture de la Bibliothèque Saul Bellow where I worked with a group of four architects evaluating and choosing a winning design for the renovation of the Saul Bellow Library in Lachine. This experience was very exciting as I was considered the resident library expert! Stay tuned for our Fall Kick-Off to hear more about library renovations.

Before wishing you the best for the summer holidays, I would like to congratulate each new incoming member on the 2011-2012 Board.  I am looking forward to working with each and every one of you especially now that we have a newly adopted strategic plan to look to for guidance.  

And just one last thing. Before leaving for your summer holidays, don’t forget to sign up for le Congrès des Milieux documentaires (, a conference held in November, where ABQLA will be organizing and sponsoring a workshop with Kathy Dempsey, owner/founder of Libraries Are Essential consultancy.

This workshop will provide participants with practical tools and techniques for redefining their marketing messages. She will focus on the nuts and bolts of marketing your library services and spaces.
