February 26, 2018. – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries is celebrating the start of Fair Dealing Week 2018 by taking to social media and relaunching an expanded website to promote the benefits of copyright's fair dealing exception.

Help CARL communicate the value of fair dealing within Canada's copyright ecosystem

Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week 2018 runs from Monday, February 26 to Friday, March 2.

During this week, academic libraries and other organizations inform the broader community about their right to deal fairly with works and how this legal provision promotes freedom of expression and equitable access to copyright-protected materials. Canada's federal government is currently reviewing the Copyright Act, which makes it particularly important that the value and role of fair dealing be made clear as part of the broader discussion.

The RDA Restructure & Redesign (3R) project will result in a brand new toolkit to be launched on June 13, 2018.

Please join us as Emma Cross, Chair of the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing guides us through a preview of the new toolkit and updates us on some of the most important changes. The redesigned toolkit is Linked Data ready and incorporates changes based on user feedback and the shift from FRBR to the IFLA Library Reference Model.

The ABQLA Bulletin is looking for book reviewers for children's books. As a reviewer, you will get to see the books before they are in the bookstores and you get to keep the books you review. We provide guidance and instructions on how to write a short book review. New reviewers are welcome!

Fair Dealing in Canada website -- Call for Fair Dealing Testimonials

In 2016, the Scholarly Communication and Copyright Office at the University of Toronto developed the Fair Dealing in Canada website as a place to collect testimonials from students, instructors and researchers on the importance of fair dealing in their lives. Several post-secondary institutions across the country contributed content towards this initiative.

Voilà – Canada’s new national union catalogue

February 1, 2018 – Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is proud to launch Voilà, Canada’s new national union catalogue, hosted on the OCLC website. The announcement was made today to thousands of participants gathered at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference held in Toronto.
