President's Message - December 2012

The last time I wrote to you was back in June, when I had just returned from the CLA Conference and Tradeshow in Ottawa. The summer seemed like it would last forever and I looked forward to a whole year at the helm of ABQLA. I am now half way through my mandate and I am proud of everything that has been accomplished so far.

Over the summer, our Vice-President, Robin Canuel, our Past-President, Julie-Anne Cardella, and I started looking for a venue for the 2013 Annual Conference. I am delighted to announce that our next conference will be held at the Gelber Conference Centre, located in the same building as the Jewish Public Library. Many thanks to Leticia Cuenca for the suggestion! Robin has been working hard with the rest of the Conference Planning Committee to bring to you another fabulous conference. Its theme, Assessment: Gaining Insight, Improving Services is highly relevant and timely, especially in these days of budgetary restraint. Save the date, May 9, 2013, and keep an eye on our website for the exciting program.

In August, Robin and I represented ABQLA at a two-day meeting of the Partnership, Canada's national network of provincial and territorial library associations, in Toronto. It was the third time that I attended this meeting and each time I do, I am struck by the amazing work that all library associations do, whether they are big or small. In the fall, I was pleased to represent ABQLA at the Congrès des milieux documentaires (CMD). ABQLA sponsored the Friday morning plenary session and I was very happy to introduce the keynote speaker, noted anthropologist, author, radio host, and overall "wise man", Serge Bouchard.

In October, we had a delightful Fall Kick Off at the National Film Board of Canada. In addition, each section was busy organizing exciting fall events. We had a super-practical session on Outreach 101, a fun evening at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and fascinating presentations on digitization in the humanities. ABQLA's Youth and School Library Sections also co-sponsored an exceptional evening with Librarians Without Borders on libraries and education in Guatemala, with special guest speaker, Jorge Chojolán.

In November we once again participated in the CODE Fundraiser. This year, in addition to having CODE’s Ann Collins speak to us, we had Ingrid Parent, President of IFLA join us for a fun and informative evening.

Looking forward to the new year, we will be having an association-wide event on February 22, entitled: Invest in Your Career: Intensive Workshop with Ulla de Stricker. It will be a one-day, hands-on workshop that will be useful to all members at all points in their career. Watch your inboxes for all the details.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the Communications Committee for giving our Bulletin a fresh new look! Nice job!
