Playfully dark and silly, Frankie D, Vegan Vampire is a grade school book about a vegan vampire family adjusting to American life. Each chapter is titled like a tutorial, as Frankie teaches the reader how he is adjusting to different parts of his new life living in the daytime and attending fourth grade. One of the strongest parts of this book is how Frankie deals with being bullied, taking a compassionate and understanding approach. There are cute black and white illustrations throughout, representing different moments in the story. Overall, Frankie D is a book about friendship, family, and making connections, while recognizing and embracing differences between people. It is a strong first entry in a new series, ending with an interesting cliffhanger.
