In the sequel to Today Tonight Tomorrow, Rowan and Neil tackle the pressures of a long-distance relationship during their first year of college. Rowan struggles to find her voice as a romance writer, while Neil grapples with his relationship with his incarcerated father. Past Present Future makes references to events from the first book, but it is not necessary to have read it for readers to follow along. Chapters alternate between Rowan and Neil’s point-of-view and chapter heads are illustrated with either a Boston or an NYC skyline, respectively. Some text conversations between characters are displayed as chat bubbles. Though Past Present Future is rated teen fiction ages 14 and up/grade 9 and up, the detail of sexual content between characters of legal age skews more in the direction of an older young adult audience.
