Skating Wild on an Inland Sea is a stunning picture book chronicling a day in the life of two children as they journey from their cabin to skating on Lake Superior. They take in the snowy landscape around them as they listen to the sounds of the wind, the animals on the shore, their skates gliding on the ice and the song of the lake itself. The story is simple and straightforward, but made captivating through rich description and beautiful illustrations. The use of colour in this book is particularly impressive; the beginning is almost entirely cool shades of blue, until the sun rises with brilliant warm yellows. Pendziwol’s melodic text really brings the lake and its surroundings to life. This book is perfect for a calming, cozy winter storytime– especially if paired with an outdoor adventure.
