Review Alexander Slack

A rich and beautifully illustrated children’s picture book, The Only Way to Make Bread describes the basic process for baking bread so young children can understand. The illustrations are vibrant, lively, and detailed. Diversity, family, and sharing and celebrating differences are at the heart of this story, representing the variety of different types of bread from all over the world. The final pages even share some recipes for arepas and pandesal, encouraging kids to try making them with their favourite adult. The warm, pastel-style artwork is the most engaging feature of this book. You can spend a long time lingering on the details of each page. The prose is accessible and appropriate for young children, but not very rhythmic or memorable. It is the illustrations and love for bread of all kinds that make this book stand out.
