Based on the author’s own mother and childhood, My Mother Was A Nanny walks you through a week in the life of mummy and her daughter. It depicts her multifaceted roles as a mother, a nanny, a friend, and many others. Though the daughter at times feels she has to compete for her mother’s attention, she realizes by Sunday she is indeed loved and cared for when she realizes her mother spent her spare moments during the week making her and her sisters a surprise. I really enjoyed being able to experience the story through the child’s eyes, and getting a sense of the role Mummy played in her community, with the many different hats she wore. The book is illustrated by the author and contains vibrant acrylic paintings with whimsical textures and patterns interspersed throughout. This book is appropriate for daycare, elementary school and public library collections.
