Policies

  • We acknowledge that the ABQLA was founded on the unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka people of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, in Tiohtià:ke, a site that has long served as a hub of Indigenous diplomacy and commerce.

We recognize that what is now known as Quebec includes the historical ancestral territories of many Indigenous nations, and that our members depend on traditional indigenous territories to work, live, and play.  We extend our gratitude to the many Indigenous peoples who continue to steward these lands.

We acknowledge that our ability to live and work on these lands today is a direct result of  the colonization of Indigenous peoples that began at the time of settlement.  The many harms caused by these policies continue to be felt in Indigenous communities.

We commit to reconciliation and to working against the forces of colonization in the world of libraries, to amplifying Indigenous voices, and to listening, learning, and establishing meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities.  We urge our members to embark on and share personal and professional decolonization journeys.
