Fake Gnus is a lighthearted and playful fiction picture book following child reporter Scoop Jackson as he investigates the disappearance of Gnus (“nooz”) from their pen at the zoo. Our protagonist must figure out if tips from various sources are real or fake.

This fun book simultaneously incorporates the development of critical thinking, vocabulary, and gnu knowledge. Gnu facts take centre stage as a vehicle for exemplifying deductive reasoning. While the story itself does not directly explore reputable sources, opinion versus fact, or the five Ws of journalism, these topics are touched on in the post-script note. A quiz is also included. The vocabulary in Fake Gnus includes some advanced words with definitions embedded in the narrative.  It would be well suited as a resource in school and/or children’s libraries. With ample opportunity for engagement (“real gnus or fake gnus?!”), Fake Gnus would be especially fitting for read-aloud and storytimes.
