Review by Erin Dunlop
This bilingual picture book tells the story of mnoomin’s life cycle in English and Anishinaabemowin. Through the eyes of an Indigenous child, we start with mnoomin (also called wild rice) as a seed, following it as it grows into a plant, then a field before being harvested, processed, eaten, and replanted. Mnoomin maan’gowing illustrates the cultural and ecological importance of this plant. From fish hiding among the sprouts, to ducks nesting in its fields, this story highlights interconnectedness and shared responsibility between all living things. It is a beautiful book that shows deep respect, love, and gratitude for mnoomin and all who contribute to its life cycle. The text in both languages is informative and thought-provoking, and the beautiful illustrations complement it perfectly. Mnoomin maan’gowing / The Gift of Mnoomin is a great way to introduce children to ecosystems through an Indigenous lens, especially for those living on traditional Anishinaabe territory.
